Like many of us at the end of last year, Saatchi & Saatchi was looking forward to moving past 2009. It had been a tumultuous year – full of ups and downs, all of which we couldn't wait to move past. To say adieu to it all, Saatchi approached us with an idea for giving 2009 the finger and asked us to help them to bring it to fruition.
The website featured a customizable YouTube video wall of the most talked about events in 2009, all playing simultaneously, replicating the insanity of our news media. Users could either choose from our hand-picked crop of newsmakers such as Balloon Boy, John and Kate, H1N1, Carrie Prejean, and the Recession, amongst others, or they could enter their own set of YouTube URLs. Once their wall was complete, users literally gave 2009 the finger by triggering a sequence that included a middle finger rocketing into the air where it collided with 2009, blowing it to smithereens.
Users were able to share their custom salute with their friends on Facebook, Twitter, or by copying a unique URL.
